Safety systems have advanced greatly over the methods of protection used previously. And the advances in gas detection are certainly included in the giant steps forward. Today's gas monitors have features and technology that make installation, use and maintenance easier than ever before. However it is vital that every plant receive a thorough hazard assessment prior to purchase or installation of a gas monitoring system.

A well designed gas detection system is capable of minimizing the risks to personnel, property and processes. The hazard assessment should be performed by a gas detection professional or engineer who will be able to select the appropriate technology to maximize the system's effectiveness. In addition to the choice of technology, the location of sensors and annunciation is equally important.

Hazard Assessment Check-list:

  • Hazard Identification - Establish the most likely sources of a gas leak.
  • Ignition Sources - Locate possible sources of ignition.
  • Ventilation- Evaluate air movement that may diffuse a leak.
  • Confinement - Locate potential places where gas pockets could be created (pits, peaks, roofs, etc.).
  • Environment - Temperature can affect the vapor density and other gas properties and should be evaluated.
  • Regulations - Review local and national regulations for monitoring which may impact the exposure limits for certain gases and other requirements. Sensidyne recommends review of the national fire codes (NFPA) , electrical codes (NEC) and government occupational codes (OSHA).
  • Construction - Expansion and other construction projects may alter the effectiveness of safety systems already in place. Perform a thorough safety and hazard assessment before and after a construction or expansion project.

Sensidyne recommends that a certified safety professional should perform the hazard assessment before selecting or installing gas monitoring equipment. For assistance or to answer question you may have, please contact our experienced Application Engineering team who would be happy to assist.
